What Does the International Media Say About South Africa?

Just over six weeks ago South Africa completed the hosting of the ‘dry-run’ for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the Confederations Cup.

All post-analysis reports seem to indicate that the ConFed was a success and that South Africa is ready for the World Cup. Technically and in terms of Fifa expectations this might be correct – but there are still a number of communication challenges ahead, particularly internationally. Not surprisingly, South African media were considerably more enthusiastic about the ConFed Cup and the emerging expectations for June next year when compared to international counterparts.

Internationally, opinions differ from country to country and countries that previously showed little coverage on South Africa, such as Japan are now increasingly displaying a diversity of coverage, from social, political to economic issues. The construction strikes in July had a large impact on international reporting: post-ConFed excitement has now turned to concern, and even though the strikes have ended, internationally media pose serious questions about perceived continuous disruptions of the infrastructure building. On Monday, Media Tenor will show the results of its ongoing in-depth coverage of the international coverage on South Africa, reflect on the ConFed Cup and highlight the opportunities and challenges ahead for the countries’ communicators that have emerged from the media research.

Be there to get the insight: NCP Conference, 17 August, at Sandton Convention Centre.
