To Twitter or not to Twitter?

twitter-logo-small1People who don’t know anything about Twitter mock this very handy social networking tool. I so often read print journalists, especially columnists about how they do not have time to read about what Britney Spears had for breakfast or endure every minute of the day along with Uwe in Hamburg or some distant contact they met twenty years ago on a student ski-trip.

Well I don’t either. I also don’t have time, I’m too busy making connections online for my business and driving traffic to my blog and website on twitter!

Twitter is a Tool for Networking and Micro-blogging

Twitter is a tool and the way you use it depends on what you get out of it.

You choose the people you what to follow. If people follow you and you do not like them or you feel they are boring, irrelevant or talk rubbish – you shut them down.

Definition of Twitter

Wikipedia’s definition of Twitter:

Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the author’s profile page and delivered to the author’s subscribers who are known as followers. Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends or, by default, allow open access. Users can send and receive tweets via the Twitter website or by mobile phone.

Why Would People follow You on Twitter

There is a reason why people follow you, value. If you can provide value to your follower you will not only make that individual happy, but you will most likely attract more followers. Providing quality content is always a great way to provide your followers with value. The first thing that comes to mind is writing up a great blog post, and linking the post in a tweet. And make sure your tweet has some key words in it – think of what people would type in a search box if they wanted to find your tweet – those are keywords.

Link Shorteners

You only have 140 characters and you need to make them count, so you do not want to want them on the URL. Fortunately, there are link or URL shorteners.
